$5 zoom lens for a happy snap camera

June 6th, 2010
Ok I've been reading through the discussion subjects and ran into this thread ( http://365project.org/discuss/general/723/questioned-stopped-told-off-for-taking-photos) jogging my memory about something which may help anyone that goes to concerts / sporting events etc.

Last year I went to the american football game in London and was told that no professional looking cameras would be permitted. My ixus 100 only has something like 2x optical zoom and i'm not a big fan of digital zoom.

All you need to do is put the lens up near your dodgy $5 binoculars, jiggle it around a bit to get a clean shot and hey presto.. it works

unfortunately, now that i'm trying to find the photos that I took on the day, I cant find them... typical

ok I knew there' be doubters amongst you :P
And I still cant find the pictures, but I just ran outside to take some test snaps... here's the before and afters. Ok yes, with binoculars, its quite unsteady so you do have to have a steady hand which I dont but you get the idea :)

the other thing to note is that you'll have to move the camera around the eye hole of the binoculars otherwise you'll see black encroaching on your shot (from around the eye hole). Luckily with a happy snap, you can see the image directly in the back of the camera anyway so you know whether its good before you take the snap.

Let all you doubters get out there and try it (thats you jenn heh heh). I'll keep looking for my gridiron photos when i get home from work... its somewhere amongst the many thousands that i had when my pcs went down and i'm still trying to retrieve them
