Dogwood Photography 52 Week Challenge 2019 is here!!

Hi everyone,

Have you all had a lovely holiday season? Good 😊

The moment you’ve all been waiting for is here – the brand new shiny list of themes for the Dogwood Photography 52 Week Challenge has been published, so we’re all set for 2019…

If you’re not familiar with the challenge, or you’ve just joined 365 (welcome!) – this is a year-long challenge with a new theme each week, which has been put together by Dale Foshe and the most excellent community of photographers over at Dogwood Photography . The challenge is followed by lots of people on a variety of different groups and sites online, and Dale is happy to have our little band of intrepid snappers on board 😊

The 52 Week Challenge is a fantastic way to try out new techniques, learn more about photography, and have a little fun along the way – it’s not a competition so there won’t be any judging or winners for each week, and you’re not obliged to complete every theme.

I’ll post a reminder for the coming week’s topic each weekend – if you’d like to be tagged for a notification when I post these, drop me a comment and I’ll pop you on the list. Below is the full list of themes for the year, so that you can have a look at what to expect for 2019.

I’ve taken theme and category descriptions directly from the challenge page on the Dogwood Photography website , where you’ll also find more information about other places to share online, and a variety of tags. I really recommend taking some time to check out the Dogwood website, to have a look at the gorgeous photography, find out more about the challenge creators, and even get some inspiration from previous year’s challenges.

On tagging – in addition to the general tags recommended on the site, we also use our own tags here on 365 which break the themes down by week as well as the year. These will be posted with the reminder each week.

This year, there are new categories! Each theme will be in one of the following categories…

Story Telling:
Good photographers can take beautiful images of something. Great photographers can tell a story with an image. In this category you will take a prompt and turn it into a photographic story.

Compositional Eye:
In past challenges we have explored the rules of composition. This year we push the rules even further by using them in specific ways to train your compositional eye.

Inspiration:
In this wide-open category, we start with a simple inspiration. Use this inspiration as creatively as you can. There are no rules so feel free to think outside of the box.

Story Telling: Self-Portrait
Take a picture that tells us who you are, without actually showing your face.

Composition: Rule of Thirds Motion
You already know what the rule of thirds is, now is the time to use it. Use Rule of Thirds to show motion in your picture.

Inspiration: Black and White
Your inspiration this week is to simply take an amazing Black and White photograph of any subject you want.

Story Telling: Warmth
Tell a story that makes us feel warm inside.

Week 5 – 28th Jan
Composition: Symmetry Landscape
Landscape is one of the most practiced type of photography. Use Symmetry in a Landscape to create a new viewpoint for this week's image.

Week 6 – 4th Feb
Inspiration: #NoFilter
No limit on what you shoot this week, as long as the image is pure. No filters, presets or other edits. Basic exposure corrections only this week.

Story Telling: Love Story
Make us feel the love in this week's photo. Tell a love story in one image.

Week 8 – 18th Feb
Composition: Leading Lines
It is easy to use Leading Lines to show depth in an image or guide the eye to a specific spot in the image. Instead, this week use leading lines to show the concept of infinity.

Inspiration: Mood
Your Artistic Inspiration this week is the mood you are feeling today. Take that mood and use it to create art.

Week 10 – 4th Mar
Story Telling: Hometown
Tell us the story of your hometown. It could be a famous landmark, something the town is known for, or even just your favorite place to relax.

Composition: Fill the Frame
Using Fill the Frame is a great way to isolate your subject and create interest in your photo. Can you do it with only one color in the frame? Fill the Frame with one color.

Trash is your inspiration. Tell a story or create something beautiful.

Story Telling: New Beginnings
Our world is full of circular patterns; as some things end, others begin. Tell us a story of a New Beginning.

Composition: Center Frame Portrait
Center Framed composition is a great way to isolate your subject. Use this knowledge to create a portrait that exhibits loneliness.

Balanced composition is pretty straightforward, unless you are trying to shoot in the "Accidental Renaissance" style. So shoot a balanced image in the Accidental Renaissance style.
