Abstract-18 Challenge. Abstracts are what you make them - have a go!!

March 16th, 2019
Many thanks to FB @fbailey for hosting the last Abstract Challenge, and to everyone who took part/voted. Many thanks also from me personally, this is one of my favourite challenges and I was chuffed to be the winner!

So now it’s onto Abstract-18:

 Please tag your entry- Abstract-18
 Starting Date is today- 8th March
 Finishing Date is------- 24th March (just by the end of the day wherever you
happen to live!)
 To see all entries entries go to - https://365project.org/tags/abstract-18 Or
just put abstract-18 into the Browse – By Tag section at the top of the page.

Here are some ideas and suggestions, from Wikipedia and copied and pasted from previous challenges:

1. A definition of an Abstract Image:

Abstract photography is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials. An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene, it may involve the use of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and/or form to convey a feeling, sensation or impression, it may be produced using traditional photographic equipment or it may be created by directly manipulating film, paper or other photographic media, including digital presentations.

2. Two helpful articles about abstract photography are linked below:
https://petapixel.com/2017/03/20/introduction-abstract-photography/
https://www.adorama.com/alc/abstract-photography-for-beginners-9-tips-for-
capturing-stunning-abstract-images

Basically, just choose a subject and try to see it in abstract form so that the subject is not easily recognizable. Or choose an abstract concept eg lines and angles, shapes and colours etc and go for a bit of a walk! There are no restrictions on what to shoot. You might want to try a subject that you know very well or something quite new to you. You could choose a particular angle or close in on a part of it. You will need to consider factors such as what focal length and which exposure parameters would be best to realize your vision…

3. Please keep these things in mind:
• As far as possible the actual object is not immediately recognizable.
• Remember one possibility is seeing abstract before you shoot.
• Post-production - edits such as color saturation, double exposures, contrast
enhancements and black and white or negative conversions are fine, but please, if possible, try to minimize the use of software filters that significantly change the image in order to make it abstract. (There are other challenges that
focus on that e.g. ETSOOI.) However, if you have a definite idea in mind that
requires this type of processing, please give it a go and maybe explain your
concept in your intro.
• The images should be taken within the time frame of the challenge.
• You are encouraged to enter as many images as you like! However, for
judging, only one image will be chosen from any one contestant.
• As with other challenges the person who wins has the honor of hosting the
next one.

If you can, please post your submissions on this thread to keep it visible and encourage more entries! It also gives us a chance to appreciate your entries.

Many thanks and we’ll look forward to seeing what you produce.
Cheers Rob

If you like images which appeal, not because of their content but because of their form, or structure, or colour, or shape, or lines ...... - please share your abstract with us. :)

Rob - today is the 16th. Did you want to extend the ending date by a week?

@helstor had a brilliant guitar shot I suggested he entered for this

@farmreporter Hi Wendy - the finishing date at the moment is the 24th so I think that will probably be OK - there has been quite a good response. I just reposted it because I changed the intro a little to encourage more people to have a go if they wanted to play with the processing a bit more. Thanks for the thought though!! Cheers Rob

Is this abstract Rob?? If not I'll untag it

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Gosh Jackie - what a question. I really like it and it "is not easily recognizable" and "it involves the use of color, light, shadow and texture to convey a feeling, sensation or impression". So, it fits the definition (who even knew there was a definition!), it's cool, it's interesting and please don't untag it!! Cheers Rob :)

4 days to go - so here's some crazy green to put the thread on page1:

Thanks to everyone who has already entered the challenge - it's been wonderful to be able to enjoy so many great abstracts!!

Rob - It's still the 24th here in Canada and the US - so we still had time to upload according to your instructions.
Oh well - serves me right for leaving things to the last moment! I'll upload it anyway.
