Many thanks for all who voted for me in the Freeman Patterson artist challenge. I do love the creativeness in Freeman Patterson's work. Many thanks also to our host Ann LeFevre for coming up with such an interesting person to emulate.
Where Patterson tends to blur, distort and complicate I am choosing Jeffrey Smart who tends to simplify the image, but also add a degree of quirkyness. Jeffrey Smart is an Australian painter (well, we still claim him as our own even though he spent most of his life outside Australia). He was born in Adelaide in 1921, took off to Italy in 1963 and tended to stay until he died in Tuscany in 2013.
What I like about his work is the ordinaryness of his urban and industrial images. Smart paints roads, buses, underpasses, architectural details and patterns, often accompanied by solitary figures. He uses strong perspective, complementary colours and minimalism. His best known painting in Australia is Cahill Expessway, done in 1962.
