52 Week Challenge 2021!

January 2nd, 2021
Hi all,

The new list is out!
A brand new shiny list of delicious themes for 2021 has been released by Justine and Alison for the Capture52 challenge. Well done if you’ve managed to follow along all year (and what a crazy year it’s been…), and a big welcome if you’ve just joined in 😊

If you are new – a bit of history: The Capture52 Challenge started out as the 52 Week Challenge hosted by Dale Foshe of Dogwood Photography, and assisted by Justine Solomano and Alison Crea among others.

Last year, Justine and Alison took over the reins and the Capture52 Challenge was born. Here on 365, we had been following the 52 Week Challenge (with Dale’s blessing) since about 2016, so I reached out to the ladies and asked if it was OK that we continue to do so here on 365 – and they were happy for us to do so.

There’s a very lively Facebook group for this challenge, with thousands of members and some amazing photography, and lots of discussion and feedback if you want it – if you’re on Facebook, I highly recommend joining - Capture52 Facebook Group

You can see Justine and Alison’s amazing photography here:

So let’s kick off Week 1 for 2021 (1st – 7th Jan), and the theme is:

NEW
Let’s forget about the year that was 2020 and start fresh in 2021...Use this as your inspiration.

If you’re new to 365 – join us! It’s a lot of fun and there’s no pressure to complete each week, it’s not a competition and there won’t be any judging. If you’d like a notification when the weekly theme reminders are posted, comment and let me know!

Week 1 (1st – 7th Jan)
New: Let’s forget about the year that was 2020 and start fresh in 2021...Use this as your inspiration.

Week 2 (8th – 14th Jan)
Framed: Using elements of a scene to create a frame within your frame. For example, you might shoot through a doorway, pulled back curtains, branches, fences, tunnels, or even a frame to highlight your subject.

Week 3 (15th – 21st Jan)
Mobile Phone: Anything goes but your photo must be taken and edited on your phone. Pay attention to composition, exposure etc.

Week 4 (22nd – 28th Jan)
Scapes: City, land or sea at any time of day.

Week 5 (29th Jan – 4th Feb)
Traditional black & white: Black and white photography is the art of using different tones of grey, ranging from white to dark, to create compelling images. No monochrome other than true black and white.

Week 6 (5th – 11th Feb)
Song: Choose a song and photograph it, tell us what song you chose.

Week 7 (12th – 18th Feb)
Negative space food photography: Negative space is the area surrounding the main subject in a photograph which is left unoccupied. Put simply, it is the space around the object itself that helps define the positive space (or main focus). When used creatively together, negative and positive space can communicate the composition of your photograph. Make a compelling food photo using negative space.

Week 8 (19th – 25th Feb)
Primary colours: Primary colours are sets of colours that can be combined to make a useful range of colours. Create an image using only yellow, red and blue (no mixing colours to make any other colour).

Week 9 (26th Feb – 4th Mar)
Fun with water: Time to get wet! Experiment and have some fun with water this week.

Week 10 (5th – 11th Mar)
White on white: Shooting white on white is challenging. Concentrate on precise lighting in order to separate your subject from your background.

Week 11 (12th – 18th Mar)
Circles: Circles can be seen everywhere, make a compelling photo using circles.

Week 12 (19th – 25th Mar)
Something old: Find something old and take a photo of it.

Week 13 (26th Mar – 1st Apr)
Out of focus: Purposely leave your main subject (or even your whole shot) out of focus to create your image this week.

Week 14 (2nd – 8th Apr)
Freeze motion: Use your settings on your camera to stop the movement that is happening in your photo. As the photographer you want to get your shutter speed & aperture to work together to create a sharp photo, freezing the motion of your subject. 1/500 sec is a good starting point.

Week 15 (9th – 15th Apr)
Celebration: We all celebrate something, Birthdays, Christmas, etc. use it as your prompt this week.

Week 16 (16th – 22nd Apr)
Conceptual: Conceptual photography is a type of photography that illustrates a concept or idea. Take a conceptual photo.

Week 17 (23rd – 29th Apr)
Architecture: Get out and about and take a photo of buildings or architectural structures.

Week 18 (30th Apr – 6th May)
Spooky: Explore subjects that automatically evoke a creepy, eerie or spooky sensation, the scarier the better.

Week 19 (7th – 13th May)
Be creative with Christmas: Set out to make a creative Christmas image using what props you may have lying around.

Week 20 (14th – 20th May)
Love is in the air: There are many kinds of love: same-sex love, sibling love, the love of a parent for their child, the love of deep friendship, and love deepened by decades together. There’s even the love between a person and their pets, love between animals and things we love. Take a love inspired photo.

Week 21 (21st – 27th May)
Five: We all know about the rule of odds. Take a photo with only 5 of something.

Week 22 (28th May – 3rd Jun)
Abstract body part (no faces): Abstraction takes out the problems of the rigid subject matter. Pay close attention to how you light and expose your image.

Week 23 (4th – 10th Jun)
Repetition: Repetition of an item, colour or element creates a pattern, and patterns draw the eye in to a photograph...find or create a pattern.

Week 24 (11th – 17th Jun)
Just for fun: Take a fun photo, can be of anything as long as it’s fun.

Week 25 (18th – 24th Jun)
Quiet: We all enjoy quiet time. Create a photo that gives us a sense of quiet, serenity, calm, tranquillity etc. Get out and photograph at the beginning of or end of light and make some magic!

Week 26 (25th Jun – 1st Jul)
Flowers: Just photograph flowers...can be one single flower or flowers in your garden, your choice as long as you bring flowers.

Week 27 (2nd – 8th Jul)
Details: Create an image that show cases the finer details of your subject, the lines, the cracks, the surface texture.

Week 28 (9th – 15th Jul)
Fill the frame: An oldie but a goodie. Fill the frame with your subject.

Week 34 (20th – 26th Aug)
Gratitude: What are you appreciative of? Capture something that this week that you are thankful for.

Week 35 (27th Aug – 2nd Sep)
Purple: It’s my favourite colour and it’s your inspiration for this week.

Week 36 (3rd – 9th Sep)

Week 37 (10th – 16th Sep)
The great outdoors: From a wide open landscape to a macro image of an ant, take a picture that shows us something great about the outdoors.

Week 38 (17th – 23rd Sep)
Bokeh: Use a shallow depth of field to create some delicious bokeh.

Week 39 (24th – 30th Sep)
Looking in: Give us a peek inside something this week.

Week 40 (1st – 7th Oct)
Backlight: Backlighting is a great way of creating dramatic effect and separating your subject from the background. It can be done using natural lighting or studio lights.

Week 41 (8th – 14th Oct)
Leading lines: This is one of the most used guides in composition. Draw the viewer into your image with a strong leading line.

Week 42 (15th – 21st Oct)

Week 47 (19th – 25th Nov)

Week 48 (26th Nov – 2nd Dec)
High key: The opposite of low key. Also does not have to be black and white.

Week 49 (3rd – 9th Dec)
Colourful: This week shoot an image that’s full of colour.

Week 50 (10th – 16th Dec)
