Decisive Moments in Black and White

July 23rd, 2021
Thank you to iqscotland for hosting the last round of the Black and White challenge and to everyone who participated and voted in that round. It is your continued support of these challenges that keep them running smoothly.

I hemmed and hawed over a subject not yet done that would garner interest before settling on 'Decisive Moment'.

Google defines the decisive moment as a concept made popular by the street photographer, photojournalist, and Magnum co-founder Henri Cartier-Bresson. The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself.

His photo ‘Behind the Gare Saint-Lazure’ perfectly embodied what Henri Cartier-Bresson coined “Decisive Moment”. It is that fleeting scene of a fast, mobile, and detail –obsessed moment.

The photo and a description of it can be found here:

While Cartier-Bresson was a photo-journalist who pioneered street photography, this challenge is not limited to that genre. Decisive moments are all around us.

Examples include the dog catching a ball, the toddler falling down, the teen giving the finger, or as the piñata breaks at a child’s birthday party. Even landscape can include a decisive moment with lightning strikes, waves breaking the seawall, or the perfect moment the sun rise breaks the horizon.

Contrastly recommends that beginners, or anyone who is practicing Henri Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moment approach, should practice finding that perfect moment by using a continuous shutter setting.

I have included two links that speak about this style of photography for those who wish to dive further into the subject.

Have fun! The challenge starts today, July 22nd and runs until August 22nd. I will select the finalists and set up the vote on the 23rd with final tabulation occurring before I go on holidays on August 30th.

And some final words from the man who coined the phrase and made this style so popular.

“The photograph itself doesn’t interest me. I want only to capture a minute part of reality”. –Henri Cartier-Bresson

An awesome selection! Ironically…. The photo I just posted today was originally going to be captioned “a moment in time” (it’s what I named the image when exporting from LR)… anyhoo - love this challenge…. In addition to the continuous shutter setting I would also recommend patience and stillness…. Wait fir the moment to come to you… don’t chase it down!

Monika - could you please make a note to remind me about the people challenge that ends on the 15th? I will be on holidays and traveling that day and probably will forget.

@farmreporter Don't worry. I usually go through the ended challenges and chech them. But I will make a note as well.
