Fine Artist Challenge - Jonathan Chritchley

March 3rd, 2022
Thank you so very much to @etienne for hosting the Artist Challenge and introducing me to the work of Valerie Jardin. I enjoyed this challenge immensely and am honoured, humbled and chuffed to have had my photograph selected as the winning Story of Hands entry.

So on to the next artist to inspire our photography. I have chosen the work of the British fine art photographer Jonathan Chritchley.

His website showcases his work and clientele. https://www.jonathanchritchley.com/ABOUT/1/caption

Please don't let the fact he only makes huge prints in square forma,t in black and white and that he loves photographing million pound Camargue horses, Icelandic ponies, waves and parts of boats to make abstract forms that he often places off centre to the right, put you off!

Jonathan Chritchley has embraced the Japanese Black Ink Sumi-e style in his minimalist portfolio called 'Strand' https://www.jonathanchritchley.com/PORTFOLIO/STRAND/1/caption and it is this minimalism that I love in his portfolio of work.

I look forward to your images inspired by Chritchley's style. More details on the artistry of sume-i is available on line, I liked this site https://www.sumi-e.it/en/what-is-sumi-e/ but horses, boats, trees, leaves, hills and water are all there to be captured in his style.

Your entries need to be taken by you within the challenge dates and tagged ac-chritchley

Starting Date March 3rd
End date April 7 ( so those doing Rainbow month can participate!)

Entries can be found here https://365project.org/tags/ac-chritchley

Jonathan has accepted my invitation to shortlist the entries.

so cool, definitely give it a try, lucky it last till April so my rainbow still can formed.
March 3rd, 2022
@yaorenliu I could extend the challenge!!
March 3rd, 2022
Please not, we should be able to fit in. I guess we can take the photos from now on and load up in April. I already feel the challenge period is too long, as this is my favorite challenge.
March 3rd, 2022
@yaorenliu you think 4 weeks is too long, that's interesting, but have extended to 7th
March 3rd, 2022
@30pics4jackiesdiamond What a great choice Jackie. His work is absolutely beautiful.
March 3rd, 2022
@nickspicsnz He spoke to our Camera Club on a Zoom last month and I fell in love!!
March 3rd, 2022
I meant normally too long, but this time we have March Rainbow so an exception.
March 3rd, 2022
Oh wow, what interesting work! Terrific choice.
March 3rd, 2022
@ljmanning glad you like, thank you
March 4th, 2022
a wonderful choice - I will do my best to have a go :)
March 4th, 2022
Great choise, never seen his photos before. As an owner of an icelandic horse I have to take the challenge.
March 4th, 2022

March 18th, 2022
@annied @365jackie @grammyn @summerfield @kali66 @salza @yorkshirekiwi @wakelys @wenbow
Good day lovely photographers, thank you for your entries, and to @cristinaledesma33 @jborrases @keramin @ljmanning @yaorenliu @nickspicsnz for showing an interest in this challenge.

I need your advice please. Jonathan Chritchley has accepted my invitation to take part in the "judging" process. He's most impressed with entries to date and I've assured him more will be entered over the month!!

Should I invite him to

A/ select his over all winner and commendations

OR

B/ invite him to select a shortlist and 365 community does the voting??

Please put your choice (A or B) in the thread below. Thank you 🎈

In 2016 I hosted the Jane Bennett artist challenged and she became involved with the voting - I can't remember whether she picked finalists or winner though - whatever you or Jonathon are happy with I am sure would be fine :) It is exciting to have the artist involved :)
March 18th, 2022
B I think!!
March 18th, 2022
cool! I would love it if he selected his top 3 and gave feedback on them and a winner.
March 18th, 2022
That’s exciting! I would likely say B, although I like @kali66 idea too.
(Also just realized that I had mis-tagged my entry. Corrected now.)
March 18th, 2022
Hard for me to decide because I like both solutions but in the long run this is not an art show but a 365 community so I’m going to go with B
March 18th, 2022
How wonderful that he is interested in being involved I would go with B although I do think that Kali's idea @kali66 is a very good idea. Are you happy not having your say re your favourites depicting his work?
March 18th, 2022
@salza Oh yes, abdication of that responsibility fine with me Sally!!
@grammyn a good point well made, thank you Katy
@ljmanning I'll go find your entry Laura, and thank you for your choice
@kali66 Thanks Kali, perhaps selecting his top five for us to vote and ill ask him which he likes the most and inform the photographer??!
@wakelys thanks Sue for that
@annied I've seen the named artist used before in voting before (perhaps your challenge) which is why I invited him and then thought not everyone will approve!

Thank you all, so far it consensus is let the 365 community choose the winner from his shortlist. J
March 19th, 2022
i lean more towards option B. there was one time the artist/photographer was asked to judge the entries and he (or maybe she) chose the winner. although the one he/she chose was good, there were quite a few entries that i thought also deserved to win. art is subjective after all so let the members at large vote for the winner. that way, there are more to get the spotlight, not just one entry.
March 19th, 2022
@summerfield thanks vikki, that it is the ethos of the 365 community
March 19th, 2022
I agree with either options... It's up to you as you host this challenge...Anyway, If the artist is interested on this challenge, let him to participate ;)
April 10th, 2022
This artist and the entries are beautiful!
April 10th, 2022
@gardenfolk I've sent him all the entries to choose a shortlist!!
April 24th, 2022
good to know he is working on the short list
April 24th, 2022
@grammyn I'm giving him until Tuesday then I'll sort it, he's had them a while now
April 24th, 2022
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I was beginning to wonder just a bit
