Well, it was a bit of a shock to have my image of piles chosen in the last artist challenge. Thanks to all who voted and also to those who participated in the challenge. It has taken me a few days to come up with a suitable artist for the next challenge and I hope my choice encourages participation.
As noted by former hosts of this challenge, choosing an artist is a daunting task but after much consideration I have selected a Canadian photographer from my home town of Vancouver - Fred Herzog. Fred was born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1930. He lost both his parents in the war and emigrated to Canada in 1952 settling in Vancouver which he called home for the rest of his life. A self taught photographer he was hired as a medical photographer by St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver and later became head of the photo/cine division of Biomedical Communications at the University of British Columbia. On evenings and weekends he walked the streets of the city, his Leica loaded with Kodachrome slide film and shot the streets and people of Vancouver. At a time when fine art photography was almost exclusively black and white his work with colour was a precursor to the later work of William Eggleston and Saul Leiter. Partly because his almost exclusive use of Kodachrome made producing fine art prints difficult Herzog was virtually unknown outside Vancouver until the early 2000's when technology caught up allowing him to produce gallery quality prints that matched the colour and intensity of Kodachrome. His work has been shown in galleries around the world, he has published several books of his images and in 2014 one of his images was featured on a postage stamp by Canada Post.
I should have known you would pick him! I’ve thought for some time that he would make a great artist challenge. Did you create a tag Chris? I don’t see one here.
As another resource, there is a nice selection from his Modern Colour series here https://www.exibartstreet.com/news/fred-herzog-modern-color/
@ljmanning Oops. Forgot about the tag. Thanks Laura. I was in a bit of a rush to get it posted because my wife and were heading out. And thanks for the link. I’ll add it to the post. Cheers.
I can’t seem to find the tag.
I will Google Fred Herzogs work.
the classic Red and deep shadows of Kodachrome is prevalent in his work, will be nice to study.
