Your week of texture and our pop of red is almost done. Believe it or not you are over halfway through your month of black and white! In the coming week we’ll return to three compositional elements, shape, line and space (choose one or alternate them), and add three design elements (pattern, contrast and perspective) to emphasize your subject and to help you compose your shot.
Compositional elements are the building blocks of your picture. They are the parts which make up the picture as a whole. I chose shapes, space and lines for the overall effect that emphasizing them in your pictures would have when you looked at your calendar view at the end of the month. But you can choose any of the 8 elements if you prefer (light, line, value, size, space, color, and shape). Most of the time the majority of these elements are at work in your picture, but sometimes one or more of them are more prominent. I encourage you not to over-think them, but just be aware of how they help to strengthen your composition when you use them.
Design elements are the way you choose to present the elements of your composition. This week we’ll use pattern, contrast, and perspective to bring out shape, lines and space (positive/negative space) in our picture. But you can choose any one of the 6 design elements if you’d like (balance, emphasis, proportion, pattern, contrast, and perspective). I cover all of these in my book, Seeing in Black and White, with examples and tips for each. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0798X7Y98
Do you have a favorite shot you took from last week (or maybe your favorite shot is someone else's)? Why not share it here? And don’t forget to check out the flashofred2018 tag every now and then to see what your fellow black and white adventurers are up to.
Have a great week everyone!

This was my favorite, because this was the first time I was able to get a good focus on this evergreen's leaves. I think the camera angle made all the difference.
@houser934 Well done Kathryn- I think it was a great choice to bring out the dot pattern too. I like how my eye moves back and forth between the shadow's pattern and the circular pattern of the dots.
@helenhall There is something about looking at trees this way that is really eye-catching. It's just such a great perspective. Good shot Helen!

Cannot believe we are past halfway.
My own favourite is this one because it came out so well in b&w:
And a favourite of someone else's is this one by Rosie @rosiekerr
She's my granddaughter- what can I say? Of course she was my favorite shot of the week!

Thanks for sharing these! So many great contributions!
Nice catch of this happy little chirper!
The "jazzy" lines of the shadow is what caught my eye, but I softened the contrast to allow the "dots" pattern to be a part of the composition.
Thank you, Jackie for including my photo. i am truly grateful (and surprised and delighted!)
