Thank you for your entries for what was a very difficult challenge A lot of thought clearly went into them and you certainly got me thinking. Special mention for @robz who threw herself whole-heartedly into the task submitting no less than nine images! I have extended the deadline by one day (to Monday February 19) because there was a mistake in my original wording: I wrote ‘midnight at the end of Sunday February 19’. Sunday was February 18!
How does one judge an abstract? This challenge deliberately gave you few clues… any subject was fair game. I assume that you took part because you wanted to practise the skill of ‘seeing’ abstract potential as you looked at your subject. I can’t truly judge by this criterion of course unless you submit further evidence, but I’ll try all the same!
As I understand it an abstract should not have any obvious representational qualities. Yet there is more to abstraction than making it look weird, unreal , distorted or vague etc. It should pose a puzzle to engage the viewer to figure out what, where and how. The purist in me says you should not say what it is… but I can understand the need to share and explain so I haven’t used that as a criterion.
I have chosen those which got me thinking the most. The closing date for voting is Monday 26 February. Here are the six finalists:
