Suggestions for "unsticking" photos

October 21st, 2021
My brother is going through old photos and has come across a couple of large prints that were stored face-to-face and are now stuck together. He asked me (and now I ask you!):

Is there a way to separate these without damage? Or minimizing damage?

As photos are processed(printed) in water or a liquid then this video might have the steps you need. I would use distilled room temperature water, tough.

@joysabin thanks! After I posted the query, I thought about it, and how I was washing prints in water back in my darkroom days…. (Who else remembers developer->stop bath->fixer->rinse?). So water shouldn’t make anything worse, I figured.

I dug around and found a couple old 4x6 prints stuck together, and soaked them for a few minutes in warm water. They came apart easily, with only slight impact to the coating (these were Matt finished). I scanned one and it didn’t show up at all.

Of course, these weren’t too stuck, but a good test.

I’d really like to hear thoughts/comments/experiences from others!
