Adding text to images

February 4th, 2025
Hi, I’m looking for a way of adding text to an image. This is *not* referring to the text to image AI challenge. The photo editing software we use is very good but doesn’t have this capability, and we no longer have access to Lightroom or Photoshop.
(Preferably free) software recommendations welcome!
Cheers, Janice

You should be able to add basic text to your image at Ribbet.com. I'm sure with their premium version you get more choices. But the basic freebie version probably has Arial, Times New Roman and Comic Sans at least along with a few more.

I think PhotoScapeX is still free and has a text ability
SnapSeed (app) has a very basic text adding tool

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll have a look at those programmes.

If you use Windows there is a progam called Paint. I use IrfanView, a free program that has been around for ages, really a photo viewer but you can add text in the Edit function,with lots of possibilities for size, color style, position etc.

@laroque Thanks Tim, that sounds great.

Maybe not the "best" way, but I save my photo, import it into Powerpoint, which has really nice text/text effects. Then I do a screen-capture, paste it into a new image in Photoshop (elements) and save. It's easier than it sounds (LOL)! I mostly use this for Album Cover Challenge entries...

@lsquared what a genius idea

I use Paint too - could be on your PC or Laptop already - loads of different fonts and sizes.

I have, on occasion, done photo editing in MS Word for its "Word Art" abilities.

@chikadnz I use GIMP, which is very, very similar to photoshop, but completely free.

@lsquared @anniesue @francoise Thanks for the recommendations, they all sound good. I will check to see if we already have Paint.
