Pollard willow by djepie

Pollard willow

Traditionally we have a lot of pollard willows in the countryside. This very old one I came across while walking on a so-called clog path.
Looks like a nice place to walk with lots of photo opportunities :-)

I never heard of them. I will have to look them up and see what they look like in the warm months. Nice photo

@cdcook48 @myhrhelper A pollard willow (knotwilg) is a willow whose branches are pruned every 2-6 years. These branches could be used to feed the cattle and they also used to make fences, baskets e.o. It's a lot of work to keep these pollard willows in good shape and therefore many farmes cleared them.
@christinav A clog path (klompenpad) is an often muddy path along the borders of agricultural grounds/meadows. These routes make it possible even in a crowded country like The Netherlands to walk cross country. Farmers get paid by the government for letting walkers across their fields and pastures. Called klompenpad because farmers used to wear wooden clogs (klompen) and they still do.
