New Zealand Swamp Harrier Hawk by dkbarnett

New Zealand Swamp Harrier Hawk

At least I think that is what it is. We just call them hawks. I was looking through some old photographs last night (while looking for a photo of a rubber dinghy that has gone missing!) and came across this one of a hawk. I took this just over two years ago and is the only time I have managed to get close to one of these birds (not for want of trying). We regularly get one of these birds dropping in for breakfast and our white pigeon doves make a tasty morsel. You can see from his beak that he has been enjoying his meal! On this particular day my small yorkshire terrier gave this one a chase and it flew off carrying his pigeon, but landed by mistake in our small lake. He dragged himself onto the bank but then couldn't fly until his wings dried out. I was able to get within a metre of him. You can even see my reflection in his eye if you look!
So thats the secret to get a Hawke shot ... get them to take a swim... they are very elusive... great shot..

That sounds a very unusual way of calming a hawk down, but it's obviously a very effective way. Excellent capture,Delwyn.
