The first night back home in New Plymouth so had all of the family who lives here for dinner. That is 4 kids, 4 in-laws and 4 grandchildren. Heading out to the garden for herbs I first heard, then spotted this cicada. So of course I had to go grab my camera for a few shots.

Who would ever imagine that strange looking insect could possibly be as beautiful as this….pretty colours & fantastic detail. Fave. They are the sound of summer to me as we don’t have them in the UK.

@happypat You are right Pat, I just saw them as grey / brown creatures - not until I took the photo and looked really closely did I realise how colourful they actually are!
