bird watching

Sitting outside with my camera I spotted this cardinal. Makes me want to invest in a nice zoom lens for my Nikon.. Any suggestions?
I have a Nikon, but lens only goes to 200. so I guess I can't help. it would make a nice picture of Mr. Cardinal on top of the post.

I have a Tamron 150-600 mm lens that I love. It is quite large and bulky though. I don't know what price range you have in mind, but I see Nikon had an 80-400 mm lens through Amazon for $846.95.

An 18-300 mm that looks very small for $626.95 https://www.amazon.com/Nikon-18-300mm-3-5-6-3G-Vibration-Reduction/dp/B00JKUPRF4/ref=sr_1_13?dchild=1&keywords=Nikon+80-400mm+f%2F4.5-5.6G+VR&qid=1588636707&sr=8-13

An 80-400mm for $1,896.95

Or you could check out B&H Photo out of New York, a top-notch company for prices. If you want a Nikon lens They also offer used lens

@skipt07 Skip, Thank you for your recommendations. I've been checking prices and comparing lenses. I already have a Nikon zoom to 300 I used for the photo but I feel it is not clear and crisp. Not sure if it is me that needs a class or better glasses or a better lens

@dmdfday - I bought a 2x extender when I bought my 150-600mm Tamron lens, but if it is not a bright day with the extender on the camera has a harder time focusing. When I was looking at the prices of the lenses I was surprised that the Nikons were very comparable to the Tamrons. When I bought my lens there was close to a $1,000 dollar difference between the Tamron and a comparable Canon lens.
