2016.02.17 Wednesday: Throughout all four days of this past weekend's Great Backyard Bird Count, I watched in vain for our beautiful Red-bellied woodpeckers so they could be included in the count. I was disappointed that I did not see them at all ...but attributed that to the cold and windy weather we had experienced.
Today when I opened my window blinds the first bird that I saw was one of our Red-bellied woodpeckers -- perched right outside my kitchen window on one of our maple trees, and showing off his awesome red belly. I was happy to see him back, but sorry that he was not included in my GBBC bird count. Oh well, maybe next year!
Gorgeous shot! Love his red belly. I only had a chance to give the GBBC an honest try on Sunday but I did manage to see a male and female red-bellied so maybe that will make up for missing this guy. ;)
He is really lovely and it is a great shot of the tree as well. I know how you feel about missing him for your bird count. We have something similar in the UK and some of our regulars always absent themselves!
