I've deleted the bit about the globe thistle, silly me, should have remembered! These are about 6' tall and the heads are bigger than my fist. The main stems bear thorns and the flowers are purple and configured like a thistle flower.
Alison, this is a beautiful shot. It is so focused and clear. The depth of field is beautiful with the background blurred which makes the seeds stand out that much more. Nice photo!

The scales and delicacy are more like catananche caerulea though.
