Josephine Baker's house - Le Beau Chêne

She was really an exceptional lady. Not just the lady with bananas. She lived in Le Vésinet for many years.
The famous anecdote is that she kept a leopard and a couple of monkeys on her sprawling property and they escaped a time or two scaring the neighbors.
She became passionate about orphans and spent her spare moments spoiling the kids at the neighboring orphanage (from the Alsace Lorraine region).
In 1939, she ran a reception centre for refugees every evening at the Gare du Nord railway station at her own expense. From the preface to her memoirs, "At dawn she returns to her distant home in Le Vésinet. Before going to bed, she still obliges herself to a long prayer. She slept for a few hours and, as soon as she had her bath, she sat down at a table in her room and wrote to her soldiers". Naturally she became a member of the resistance as an informant and courier since she had the right to move freely around France.

Later in life she adopted 12 children from all over the world and bought a property, Milandes, which she turned into a kind of amusement park and unfortunately caused her a lot of financial hardships.

She was a militant anti racist She spoke at the March on Washington just before MLK gave his "I have a dream" speech!

So much to tell about this lady so grab a biography if you're interested! I feel bad leaving stuff out!
Looks like a glorious home worthy of a woman who lived so selflessly!
