The 2010 Soccer World Cup kicks off on Friday in South Africa. Even though everyone knows that our team, Bafana Bafana, haven't got a hope of getting anywhere in the tournament (they are automatic inclusions because we are hosting the event), the spectacle has provided an outlet for a massive display of patriotism by us locals. The cutest item, and one I've been sporting for over two months already, is "mirror sox". Look at the wing mirrors of the cars in the picture - each has a "sock" with the flag on it. You can get sox for all the other countries taking part - but the SA flag is everywhere. They are sold for between R30 and R100 ($4-$13) by vendors on the side of the road.

Hi, Eleanor...Karen from the USA (Virginia) here. I am just discovering your photos but I see my friends Kate and Steve and Joe and Elizabeth, etc are already good buds with you! What fun SA is having in preparation for the World Cup...I just love these mirror sox...I have never seen them in the US yet but I foresee them being here before long...bet all the universities will see selling these as another big money-maker.
