Italian sports fans (mainly football, formula 1 and cycling) are called the "Tifosi" ... the Italian word for Fans. Sitting behind us at the game on Monday were their Cape Town cousins. In summer they will be at Newlands Cricket, under the Oaks with their cooler-boxes and home-made sandwiches. On winter Saturdays they will be at Newlands Rugby, in the standing room of the Jan Pickard Stadium. They will be dressed in the team's strip - Stormers, Province or Springboks, depending on who is playing. Locally they may watch Ajax Cape Town or Santos playing soccer (that's what they call the game!); but their real allegiance is with Manchester United, the great British football club.
These men and women are wonderfully vocal in support of their team, and have a colourful range of language that would make a cockney sailor grin. This particular group knew how to make a noise with the vuvuzela, but soon ignored it and moved on to getting the refrain "Ole, Ole" going. If you watched the game and heard the whole stadium singing it at about the 70 minute mark ... it was due to the enthusiasm of the guy with the red, white and blue wig.
These are the faces of Cape Town. They are part of the reason I love living in this city.

Wonderful candid. Looks cold at the game. One thing about this project is that half the people are starting summer and half are starting winter. Great to have friends from all around the world.
@Joe - it was freeeeezing! We knew when we got the tickets that this was a possibility, but really hoped for a balmy day. Oh well. we even got hailed on ask we were queuing, and it snowed on Table Mountain (not enough to see from home, but can feel!) over night.
