The longest braai in history: It's in the Guinness Book of Records

28 hours later, and Jan Braai has set the new Guinness Book of Records record for the longest braai (barbecue) in history: 28.5 hours. This picture was taken at the 25.5 hour mark. Jan was no longer able to stand he was so tired!

What's interesting for me is the background to this marathon. The team behind "National Braai Day" for which this was a publicity event, want to encourage all South Africans to adopt next week's National Heritage Day as a national day of celebration, centered around preparing a feast for all to share. The tradition of cooking meat on coals is a great one in South Africa, so they have used the "braai" as the central concept.

All I can say is: Jan - may the wors be with you.
Wow, that poor guy must be exhausted... he certainly looks it! What a neat idea to promote National Heritage Day!

@Hilary - but never, I hope, a 28.5 hour marathon!
@Steve - I have never actually seen someone wearing gloves like that at a social situation, but I suspect he'd have crisped his hands had he not had the protection. he was so tired I think he might have forgotten to take his hands away from the coals towards the end.

What people do for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. But this was a good cause and I guess at one point he must have enjoyed it! Hope he has a good night sleep after this.

I hope it wasn't the same meat cooking for 28.5 hours! It's traditional to celebrate Australia Day (our National day) with a BBQ.
