Chicken Run by eleanor

Chicken Run

Alternative title: Why did the chicken cross the road?

The handmade, plastic chickens are sold at the Paradise Motors traffic lights on the M3. Asha and his friend sit under a huge India Rubber tree at the side of the road and keep an eye open for possible customers. This is their office: http://365project.org/eleanor/365/2011-02-23

Further up the road you'll find lurid pink flamingos and barn-yard cocks in Rastafarian colours. Different designer, I suspect.
Great shot. Made me smile.

I know exactly where this is! I stopped to buy something from them once and nearly got myself killed.

I like the way the lizards are making a false start!

@karynromeis I was very nervous taking the picture - getting out into the road would have made for better composition, but that would have been suicide ... Maybe the chickens are just slow off the mark ... being held back, as it were :)

Great shot! Interesting way to market your items but whatever works. ;-)

@dmortega We have people selling things on every street corner of the country. It's something you can do with the mild climate that we have and it comes with no overhead or maintenance costs.

They're great!

Oh, great shot! I often pass a guy who makes bright pink flamingoes in the same way...look out for them here soon...

Ah nice one, I always stream past them. Seems we both got to do chicken themes today - I know where to swop mine - they are giving me bad feather days!

Low maintenance chickens ! What's the last one so angry about :-)

@eleanor @dmortega In a country with a high rate of unemployment (20+% is the official figure, the unofficial figure is well over 40%), people do what they can to make ends meet. South Africa is a peculiar hybrid of 'first world' and developing country. The role of the informal employment sector is one of the 'developing country' aspects.

@karynromeis --- I appreciate those who do more than stand on a corner with a sign panhandling. If it's honest work then I fully support and would do what I could to help. We just don't see that here.
