Where crime is prevalent, anti-crime businesses thrive. The front gate of No 38 is a typical, low-tech response to this challenge:
High walls (trust me they cost plenty!); spy-hole cameras at the gate; armed response subscription (the ADT sign is partially obscured by the ivy); local 'block watch' subscription and then the business of printing signs ... including the 'snake oil' sign on the gate ... 'This property is protected by snakes.' Lots of people will be out of business if the crime rate goes down.
