Piel Castle by ellida

Piel Castle

Across the marshland in Walney Island's Nature Reserve looking towards Piel Island and the castle. There is also a ruined monastery on the island a victim of the dissolution ...and a pub!
was there in Aug - end of the world!

@anniesue @joansmor @ludwigsdiana @borof @ajisaac @happysnaps I love those water-runs that trace their way through the marshland. Grange-over-Sands has a similar feature. Thanks for commenting folks.

My grandfather was born in the houses just behind the lifeboat station on Roa Island, on the left of the pic. It's a shame that this sea grass is slowly encroaching into the bay.

@phil_howcroft @pusspup @kwind Thanks so much folks.
@laroque So much interesting history here! I agree about the grasses, the last time I came to these parts was 20 years ago when I visited Piel by boat.

This is a good angle. My son and I crossed from the building on the left last summer. It was a special and remote little island and a good day out.

@callymazoo Years ago my wife and sailed there from Liverpool and anchored off the island then had lunch at the pub. It's a unique place.
