The niche dedicated to St Joseph was sculpted in 1706 by an unknown sculptor. The niche, which is set within a facade, is simple. It has a receding console that wraps around the corners of the facade. The statue is life-size and both figures have a blank expression but nonetheless they are facing the person below. Unfortunately the baby's face has had its share of deterioration. I liked the soft rendition of Saint Joseph’s hair but what made me stop and shoot (apart from its intrinsic value due to its 300 year history) was baby Jesus' hand softly touching the beard at the neck.
When I find myself in front of historic artifacts I just cannot help myself but wonder about he people, in this case the sculptor, perhaps the people who commissioned the statue, and their story!
