Taken during yesteday's walk in Floriana. This is the latest monument erected in The Mall Gardens. It commemorates the first century of the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT). It is the only monument that commemorates an organisation rather than a personality. It symbolises education which opens new doors and transforms the person. The MUT's first meeting was held in 1919 in the school just across the road from the statue. A stanza penned by the late Prof. Oliver Friggieri is engraved across the marble base:
"B’qalb tajba, b’moħħ miftuħ, xgħelna l-imsiebaħ għal kull staġun, u qbadna t-triq flimkien.
Qassamna d-dawl lil kull min xtaq li jifhem,
weġibna l-Mistoqsija ta’ kull żmien."
I dedicate this to all you teachers/365ers (ex and serving) : "With a kind heart, with an open mind, we lit the lamps for every season, and we journeyed together.
We spread the light to everyone who wanted to understand, we have answered the Question of all time." (free translation)
