13th March 2016

It was a beautiful day today - way to nice to spend it in front of the computer. We drove to Crane Park which despite only being 15 minutes away from where we live, I have never visited before. The area has been designated as a nature reserve and follows the course of the river Crane, crossing two London Boroughs - the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Hounslow. The entire walk was buzzing with birds an although I’m not a ‘twitcher’, we saw at least 17 species, including 3 good fly pasts by kingfishers and two greater spotted woodpeckers.

This is the Shot Tower which was part of the Hounslow Gunpowder Works opened in the late 1760s. Crane Park Island was created to provide a mill pond for the water to drive the machinery and we found the remains of many small structures and machinery.
How interesting. Never heard of Crane Park before. Will have to investigate. Thank you for sharing your pic.
