24th April 2016

Today we went to East Sheen Cemetery as Colin has discovered that his Great Grandfather is actually buried here although there is no headstone or markings. He found the correct location a week or so ago and we went today to try and mark it out more permanently until we can plant some flowers there. In the process I decided I wanted to see one of the most well know ‘funerary’ displays in the country - the Lancaster Memorial sculpted by Sydney March. It is dedicated to George William Lancaster and his wife Elisa Mary Lancaster who died in 1920 and 1922. The memorial was designated a grade II* listed building in 1992 and is "considered one of the most significant 20th-century examples of funerary sculpture".

It really is stunning and the angel is life size (if you consider that angels would be the same size as a human!). The bronze angel has discoloured over time but I think the green verdigris from the bronze looks beautiful.

Here are some more images of this amazing memorial - https://www.facebook.com/Emma-Durnford-LRPS-Photographer-186301661422523/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1119605448092135
