The first day of our Madeiran holiday.

Paul do Mar is a lovely little village at the bottom of steep volcanic mountain and as our second floor apartment is right on the harbour (it is a converted dock house), the sea is on three sides. Directly in front of us is a four meter high bronze man called 'O Homem do Mar' (The Man of the Sea) - a memorial to people lost at sea through time. It was created in 2004 by the sculptor António Mendanha.

It is so impressive and quite reassuring to look out at during the night when the Atlantic waves are crashing in. Here are some more images taken as the sun went down this evening… (best viewed on black)
