19th May 2017

Another very hot day so I guess that the two polo necks and two cardigans that I packed will not be getting an outing! We headed out on the subway to the Chelsea district and discovered the Chelsea market which had an amazing array of food stalls and restaurants but as we had had a good breakfast we headed straight for the HighLine. This has been recently extended to 34th street and it is excellent. It is a raised railway track passing over the roads below, following the line of original railway tracks. They have been planted with trees and native plants and there were benches all along the way for a rest in the shade. It is about 1.5 miles long and it was nice to be able to walk for a distance without having to wait for the crossing.

After the calm of the HighLine we took the subway to Grand Central Station. I have wanted to visit for a long time and have seen some fantastic photos of it. The light was not quite coming in in rays as I had seen in photos but instead created little patches of sunlight on the floor amongst the crowds which gave a good effect. I messed around with slow exposures, resting the camera on the balcony wall and we enjoyed a Turkish chicken and rice lunch on the lower food court concourse.

A walk to the golf shop to look for wide golf shoes for Colin - despite me being convinced we’d find some, there were none the right size. Neither was there anything of interest in the biggest shop in the world - Macy’s on 5th Avenue although we did get a very good macchiato there in the extra posh in-store Starbucks. We hurried on to the Rockefeller Centre for our 7.10 entry time which I booked online yesterday. We rushed through to the top floor which I had read was he best place to photograph the skyline as there is no glass. As we were let in a bit early we got a great position but then had to stand in place for over an hour and a half as the sun set and dusk fell. It was worth the wait although it was close run between a long exposure shot of Grand Central Station and the Manhattan skyline above. I was quite stiff when we finally left!

Our final walk to the subway to avoid line changes took us through Times Square... which was so bright it felt like daylight and we ‘enjoyed’ a $7 ice cream between us (stupidly did not check the price before we ordered)!

This shot was handheld with an 1000 ISO f4.5 at 1/20 with a shade white balance.
