18th September 2017

The day has finally arrived when we leave the UK, Europe, the Northern hemisphere and head ‘down under’ to Australia (via Dubai)...

For the first time ever, we are traveling business class with Emirates (courtesy of the sale prices) and we cannot wait. The entire day from the pick up in the chauffeur driven Mercedes E class to the check-in and processing through security in our own special area was excellent A brief bit of busy-ness as we crossed Terminal 3 on the way to our lounge. OMG - I could get used to this but only if our lottery numbers come up whilst we are away. The food on offer was better than a number of restaurants we have eaten at and the drinks which are all high quality were constantly flowing. Trying to avoid too much alcohol before traveling I stuck to just the two Bucks Fizzes accompanying my duck confit and Arabic mezze.

Once on board the massive A380 (so big it wouldn’t even fit into a wide angle iPhone shot!), it was luxury all the way. Of course a glass of champagne was in order whilst waiting for the plane to taxi the runway. Silver service menus with choice of three starters, mains and desserts. The portland crab starter was very good. Basically our flight of about seven and a half hours continued in this fashion as we headed to Dubai for a brief stop and to change planes. I had promised myself a Mojito at the on-board bar and I fulfilled this promise - a pretty good cocktail although just a little antiseptic taste - could be the soda? I’m not complaining though.

It was quite sad to disembark at Dubai for the couple of hours until our next flight. It was also rather chaotic on the way to the lounge with 22 carat gold shops everywhere - I restrained from buying. The lounge was much bigger and not half as nice as at Heathrow but still not bad and very good fresh fruit juices. To be continued....
