8th May 2018

We decided against breakfast in the hotel as it was not nearly as impressive as the previous places and instead had coffee, fresh OJ and toasts for only €6 for the both of us.

After breakfast and sussing a self service laundrette for later we headed to the main sight in León - the cathedral. It was impressive and even more so in that it was built in the thirteen hundreds. I have never seen so much stained glass in a single church or cathedral before.

Afterwards we sourced lunch in the same place we had eaten last night. We went in and it was hot sunshine - we come out and it started raining which got heavier and heavier with thunder and lightning. Luckily we were back at the hotel by that time and then had a cup of tea whilst waiting for the rain to subside so that we could go the the laundry. It was very efficient and after less than an hour we had two large bags of washing washed, dried and folded - smelling sweet!

Time then to catch up with downloading and backing up my pics whilst others had a siesta!

We decided to try a traditional tapas bar in the evening which was fairly close to our hotel. It was very quiet when we arrived and as usual people did not start to arrive until well after 9.00pm. We ordered a range of tapas in my dodgy Spanish including ‘morcilla’ (black pudding) which is Colin’s favourite. The first few dishes came out and were delicious until we were only waiting for the morcilla. Oh dear, from the moment it appeared we were rather dubious, instead of fried slices as I’ve always seen it and indeed cooked it, it was rather ‘gloopy’ in a dish. Basically there were no solids and as the main constituent is pigs blood it is easy to imagine the consistency. Lets just say we were both very brave and tried it but it tasted or at least felt exactly like it looked. There was no way we could eat it and it took quite some explaining the chef as to why it was not what we had expected. He was intrigued and then explained that morcilla is different across Spain and would be more like we expected in Burgos with rice and other ingredients.

We felt rather queasy on the way back…

@777margo Thanks Margo (sorry about the lack of description, I've started to use my 365 as a visual diary and totally missed explaining). As you have probably have guessed this is the vaulted roof of the cathedral in Leon. It is a thirteenth century building and it renown for the amount of stained glass - some of the most anywhere in Europe. Based on the French style but using more Spanish colours of yellow and red. I'm not religious but we often visit the church and cathedrals in towns and marvel at the sheer craftmanship.
