21st November 2018

We allowed ourselves a bit of a lie in until 7.45am this morning! After a rather chaotic breakfast in comparison to yesterday we headed out North East in the city to book ourselves onto not one but two underground tours - the first to see WW2 bunkers and the second to see the Cold War nuclear bunkers. The tours were fascinating although sobering and it was strange to see bunkers built in my lifetime for an attack which mercifully never came. We were in strong need of a coffee and cake having missed out on lunch and we found a nice place with very good lemon drizzle cake for a pit stop.

Last visit of the day - I knew we’d never manage a leisurely break! - was to the East Side Gallery where one of the longest stretches of the inner Berlin Wall is still standing alongside the river. In 1990 a number of international artists were invited to come and paint sections of the wall with whatever they wanted. This is where the infamous ‘Fraternal Kiss’ based on a photo of Brezhnev and Erich Honecker is located alongside a number of other artworks. The light was rapidly fading at this point so we made our way back - we are now experts on the Berlin transport system. A brief tour around the Rewe supermarket to buy tomorrow’s dinner as we think we’ll be pretty tired after all our travels.

Later we headed out to a restaurant I had managed to book by email and as we walked there out of the Metro it started snowing hard although it did not pitch.

Good venison and a blueberry dessert with Berlin lager and wheat beer to wash it all down!
