30th January 2020

Today my friend Sarah and I planned a day up town for my birthday. We each get to choose what we want to do so I chose the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum which I try to get to each year.

Needless to say, yet again the trains were messed up so we eventually let half an hour later than planned at Wimbledon to take the District line to South Kensington. After managing to thoroughly embarrass the young chap on the ticket desk - advantages of being middle aged women - we got in. The exhibition was good this year, a little better than last year but not the best I’ve seen. There was more creativity and use of drones in the work. In the photojournalism category, one image stayed with us both was of what on first glance appeared to be a pond full of mating frogs and toads but on closer inspection showed that every single one of them had had their back legs cut off with a cleaver and so were basically dying in agony and some even had their lungs exposed. It was graphic and awful but the photographer had done his job by exposing this practice in Romania.

Later we had lunch in the museum and then headed back to Kingston as Sarah was meeting with Lillie at the cinema and I decided to pop to Uniqlo to try in some tops before getting back to hopefully selling my white spinner.

It was a fruitful afternoon as I bought 2 tops, 2 pairs of jeggings and at last the chap turned up for the spinner and we’re £25 up on our sales money which isn’t bad as I had originally had got it for free from a local shop.

Positive - a lovely day catching up with my friend
