20th August 2021

1 year, 147 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

Well the day started well with a trip to Lidl to stock up in advance of Mum and Ian’s visit. I have my complete weeks worth of menus and we managed to get pretty much everything we wanted.

Next stage was a clean around the house. This was not as onerous as usual as I had worked hard before Colin’s return a week ago so the house was not too bad. Colin was on bathroom duty when the unthinkable happened. The shower door broke again, just like it had done back in 2019 when I was cleaning the ceiling and had fallen against it! It was an accident but I was cross but the only thing I kept in mind was that it was not me this time!! The next three hours that should have been quite relaxed we’re spent trying desperately between us to refit the widget bit each wheel with 7 tiny ball-bearing gears. Again and again it fell out and the balls went everywhere. In the end I called a halt to our attempts to fix it but only after I tried balancing the door on a pepper mill and a rubber mat - don’t ask! At least we have the old electric shower upstairs in our bathroom although it has not been used for a few years so I am really hoping it’ll still work for up to four showers a day from no use at all.

Mum and Ian had a journey of over 9 hours. Unbelievable. They were shattered when they eventually arrived. I managed to knock together a fish pie after we finally gave up on fixing the shower door. It was really good to see them both.
