14th September 2021

1 year, 170 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

Oh dear. What has hit me? I woke up this morning and felt awful, totally dizzy and sea sick and I literally couldn’t stand up and then collapsed on the floor and nearly passed out. Poor Colin. I think I must have some sort of ear infection which is not good. I’ve had tinnitus and a headache for weeks and now this. Luckily Colin has some very old tablets he had been prescribed for dizziness and despite being nearly ten years old they seem to still haves some effect and I rallied enough to pack and get dressed although I couldn’t do the buffet breakfast at the hotel justice.

We should have got the shuttle to the airport and another minibus to the car hire place but Colin took the wise decision to simply order a cab for just 6 euros straight there. After about an hour and a half wait we got the car and after a long video and many photos we were finally off. Colin drove the entire way of over three hours including over the seventeen kilometre bridge out of Lisbon - Vasco da Gama Bridge - although we did manage to stop in a little town called Mora for lunch - amazing value.

We detoured before our final part of the journey to a Pingo Doce supermarket to pick up supplies. Wow - 2 bottles of wine, bottle of beer, breakfasts for 3 days, a kilo of huge prawns, lots of other stuff for only €47!

Then it was off on the final part of our journey up to Marvão. I had looked closely at the map before we left and knew the cobbled streets inside the city walls would be a challenge to drive. They were very, very tight! Colin did very well with me hanging my head out of the window to guide him and it was an easy navigate if not drive to the allocated parking. We phoned the owner who met us at the house we will be staying in for the next three nights.

It is amazing, a three bedroom, three storey medieval (although I am not convinced it is quit that old) house. Sympathetically modernised and with everything we need. We unpacked the car and after enjoying a superb meal we finally hit the sack.
