23rd November 2013

I just missed the sunset this evening as I was trying to be in all places at once (delivering cards, collecting cards and scoping out possible future exhibition spaces). As I rushed to the lock, the sky was beautiful but the sun just sank as I got there!

However I was lucky to see this rather nice tug - Speedwell - attempting to moor up below the lock. Her history (not sure why boats are always female) is that she was built by Richard Dunston at Thorne in 1968 to replace canal tugs at a time when barge traffic was declining rapidly. She is named after an earlier steam tug. I think she must be here to assist in the lock refurbishment and other work on the river during the annual 'draw-off' of the Thames between Richmond and Teddington.
I love the mood of this scene -- the darkening sky and the lighted windows and the boat herself.

I like the way the blues pick each other up in this shot--the top of the wall in front, the tug, and other boats in the background.
