Trick of the mind : the mysterious footstep

I was photographing a footstep in the sand, which looked "normal" to me as I was looking at it on the beach, but I noticed that on the control screen of my camera, the footstep was popping out of the sand rather than being imprinted in it. If I rotated the control screen of my camera upside down, this effect was disappearing. So, I made this collage : the bottom right is the original picture, the top left is the same picture rotated by 180 degrees.
I have two questions :
1) Do you also see one footstep popping out and the other one imprinted ?
2) I just discovered this by accident, but does anyone have the experience of using this trick purposefully in order to make original pictures ?
I see it as you do. I think the key is that the angle of the lower photo is such that the light source casts the shadow from the bottom-left, which is not what the brain expects. So we mentally flip the shape.

As to question #2? I'm sure I've played with this effect before, but I don't remember specific instance.

This is so weird. I can't get it to look right in my mind, no matter how hard I try.
