This year I decided to let some clover and spiderwort grow in parts of my backyard for the pollinators. I also encouraged the plants that sprouted from seeds spilled from my bird feeders, mostly sunflowers but also this safflower. It's sort of a limited No Mow May that I am enjoying.
This is so pretty! I have been planning on letting any volunteers from the bird feeders mature this year also. I hope I get some pretty ones like this!
@grammyn As the sunflowers begin go form seeds, the squirrels nip of the seed pods and eat them. I have given up trying to discourage the squirrels from the bird feeders!
Pretty shot- I heard from a bee-keeper that the biggest threat to pollinators is not the lack of flowers but the sprays we put on them to stop bugs like aphids. The bees bring that back to the hive and it infects them all. There's plenty of natural ones that people can use instead so hopefully that will start to catch on. It's fun to see what grows from those dropped seeds- if somebody doesn't nibble them away first. Good shot!
