Sugar Mill, Napoleonville, Louisiana 1998

File this under Live and Learn. I THINK this sugar mill may have been demolished. IF I had learned its name, photographed the stack better or remembered its exact location, I could revisit the site. Brandon's Cub Scout den toured it in 1998--a wonderful field trip where the boys were welcomed by retired mill workers and treated to a sugar-boiling demonstration and a jambalaya lunch.
It is a great photo with a fabulous composition. It will come to you

sounds like a perfect Cub Scout outing. Do you remember if it had an intense smell? Seems like it would smell super sweet.

@margonaut I remember a heavy, sweet smell. I was amazed they let kids tour such an old facility. I guess they didn't worry too much about OSHA rules. But it was a great day because the retired people made the Scouts feel so welcome.

We toured the Crayola Crayon factory many years ago when our sons were quite young. At the time you could walk among the hot wax machines and see what colors were being made that day! That doesn't happen now- in fact you don't even tour the factory. The company has a completely separate facility just for tourists! It sounds like this was a great experience for those boys and made the retired workers seem quite worthwhile. I wonder if a local historical society might be able to identify it for you.
