Splitting wood by farmreporter

Splitting wood

It is so hard to imagine that the early settlers did all of this by hand. They went out to the forest with axes and crosscut saws, hauled out the tree with horses or oxen, used hand saws to cut it into lengths, and then split the wood with splitting mauls.
It's no wonder they had large families - and died young!
You can see the log lengths we had brought in with a truck in the background, and Hubby is using a hydraulic wood splitter to produce the split wood seen in the foreground. We then use a trailer to haul wood to our shop.
Almost too easy!
We heat the entire house all winter with one wood stove in the basement.
Our forefathers sure had a tough time just keeping up with what they needed daily and from season to season. No time for cable TV for sure. Great shot.

I've done a bit of log splinting with an axe. Never got to use an hydraulic splitter quantity would not justify it. It certainly looks like it makes light work of it.
