Bridge over Still Waters by farmreporter

Bridge over Still Waters

Vikki @summerfield has taken over the difficult job of becoming my personal trainer during this year's Flash of Red challenge.
Last week she suggested high key, and this week it is textures.
I find that the liquid silky smoothness of the water contrasts nicely with the rough rock pilings of the bridge as well as the semi frozen ice floating on top.
I find it hard to understand the Flash of Red concept for February. But I like the scene.

I guess they have a bit of a tradition here at 365 where February is B&W month, except for Valentine's where you add a flash of red to your photo.
This is the first year of trying it, and so far it has been fun. It is quite challenging to make a conscious choice of what you want to achieve in a particular photo. Like textures, or high key.
Here is the link for the first week and we have just started the second week. https://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/29246/flash-of-red-february-week-1

@farmreporter Thanks Wendy for the info & link. Since B & W photos make me feel sad I'll try to look at the aesthetics of the photos & comment when able.

I know what you mean! It's a good thing that photography has evolved so much from the days of just B&W with the old cameras. We have so many options out there now, and so many ways of processing that we can do whatever we want now. But, it is good to sometimes go back to the basics to grow as photographers.

You got really good contrast here and the snow looks really white. Good exposure!

Lovely.

I like this shot. It looks good in B&W. I do not know the colors of the area but by looking at the gray tones, it would not look as good.

Methinks you've done well with the textures here, in particular the rocky parts of the bridge supports, the velvety snow in the foreground and on the bridge itself and on the bank beyond and again where bank meets river. I'm also seeing 'rain' over all the dark areas in shot..and wonder if it's rain on your lens ;-)

Oops, forgot to mention the appropriately sombre reflections.

@s4sayer Not rain, but it was actually snowing and blowing when I took this shot, so what you are seeing is snow.

Lots of beautiful textures and reflections in this photo

personal trainer? i'm helping a friend. i have so much to learn still in photography and most of it are things i refuse to learn! sometimes something comes easy for me to do while others aren't, and i'm just happy to share whatever little i know. and a lot of those i learned here. i think you are doing well on your own, wendy. you give me too much credit and i'm quite flattered and humbled.

you are lucky that you have access to a place like this. i like the line of vertical bars continuing on to the wood pillars and then the tree trunks. very nice, indeed! until i read your reply to margo, it didn't click in my brain the snow and/or rain. aces!
