Plans for Winter

Counted cross stitch takes patience and concentration but it is so rewarding to watch a blank piece of material take shape with colour and design.
You see, the canvas is a woven even weave material that has the same number of threads throughout, both left to right and top to bottom. This allows the stitcher to transfer the pattern which is on a piece of graph paper onto the canvas by counting the stitches of each colour.
I love counted cross it appeals to the accountant in me.

I have done this for many years now, love it!

I did some cross stitch for a while as a teenager. The OCD in me was very bothered by the fact that rounded edges were not rounded! However, having done it, I have a deep appreciation for the work that goes into it! Enjoy!!!

Nice project and picture!
I love anything to do with needles and yarn, including cross stitch, but am now working on a quilt.

I could never attempt to do this Wendy, not one of my talents I'm afraid! I admire anyone with the patience!

I never did counted cross-stitch but I have done some cross-stitch and you're right. It's very gratifying to see the finished product. This is very pretty!

Nice project and photo opportunity.

Very nice work! The closeness of the work shows the wonderful detail of the stitch consistency and the lettering is so smooth and connected. I haven’t stitched in years but am looking to frame a sampler of cutwork I did on linen years ago.

Hi Wendy, Great to meet you and see your work. . The 365 Project not only inspires me to become better photographers but also exposes me to other areas of the world. This is my first time issuing a challenge. Would you like to shoot a subject depicting motion - whether is be a slow shutter speed with a blur or a fast speed capturing momentum?

@jnorthington
That sounds like a great challenge ... thank you!

The hilarious thing is, I saw the top of the picture and thought , "oh, winter activities!" Then I saw the title.

Nice work.

Counted cross stitch is so therapeutic. I used to do it often and have had many of my projects framed. They also make wonderful personalised gifts. I struggle now with poor eye sight and so don't do it very much any more.

@salza
I know what you mean about the eyes - but I am lucky that I am near sighted so I just take off my glasses (or contact lens) to do the project ... but then it means I can't see the TV at the same time! LOL!
Getting older isn't for sissies!

@salza @farmreporter - i used to do a lot of cross stitching back in the mid-90's. as sally noted, it is therapeutic. my bestie was still in manila then and she would ask me to find this or that pattern for her. there was one design that i liked so much i bought myself one and tackled it, despite advice from a few people to start with something simple (since i didn't know a thing about sewing or stitching). but i finished it in less than two weeks. the back was a quite messy. but i got hooked and tackled a lot more complicated projects, until the eyesight became a problem. most of my projects were given as a gift. here's my third project which i gave to my good friend here in toronto: https://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2012-01-06
happy stitching!

@farmreporter I guess I choose simpler patterns and more user friendly cross stitch fabric. Nearly all of my projects are done using 32 hpi fabric!
