Quiet Corner - Critique Please

There are a ton of end of the school year field trips going on at the moment and I was blessed to be a school bus driver to the Upper Canada Village yesterday.
It is truly a blessing to be paid to wander the grounds of a pioneer village with camera in hand while waiting for the students and teachers.
Do you find that hint of greenery on the left to be distracting? Other honest opinions on this is greatly appreciated.
I also added this to "Critique" under the Discussion menu if you would rather critique it there.
I do like the light and shade, I don't think the green is a distraction, the diagonal of the teasles to the metal continer works well. The only 'thing' for me is it looks a little on the wonky side , but that's because of the teasel holder I think I might have experimented with how it looked straightened a tiny tad, but that's being super critical. FAV!

If you would crop it you'd loose the lovely light from the window. The only thing that distracts me is the teasel holder which is not quite straight, but that is the floor I think.....not you. The green is not bothering me.

I agree with all the above, except that I would have tried to change the colour of the green ;-)

Beautiful mix of light and shadow. Do you use Lightroom? I wonder if you took down the luminosity of the green, or perhaps moved the slider on its hue if that might soften the difference between the browns and that green. As for straightening ... that's tough as the wall lines look straight. It appears the floor was sloping. I'd probably let that be.

Thank you all - I will play with straightening the barrel. The walls are straight as April said because that is what I originally used to straighten the shot. It is the floor that it is sitting on that is not level as you can see ...
However - since the focal point is the barrel, it is what should be straight and hopefully walls off level will not be as noticeable!
@aecasey I do use LR (just started) and I think I will see if I can soften the hue of the green ... not sure how but will learn!

It may be me but the green becomes the focal point. I would use Hue/Saturation with only green select and you might be able to turn in brown - you may need yellow instead.

Very nice, I like the tones. You nailed the tricky lighting.

A
I like this. I don't think the green is distracting, more a lead-in to the rest of the scene and a contrast to the shadows and softer tones.
Personally, I would have left more space on the right, for the dried plants to lean into and reach for. But thats just me, I still think this is a great photo

A lovely low light image.

Yes I do find the green distracting Wendy....the colour seems to jar a bit. Would like to see the rest of the foliage highlighted a bit more so they stand out & lighten the picture more. The slight slant of the barrel doesn’t bother me as it’s all very rustic except the green . Nice light coming in from the left.

Lovely light & shadow. I don’t find the green distracting.

I like your version, too. but admit that the green vine kind of photobombed the image.

Hi Wendy, Sorry for getting to you so late in the week. I really enjoyed going through your photos.

For this shot I think most people covered what I would think of:
-straighten the pot so it is vertical
-push the greens into brown
I think I might remove the window light. either by cropping, cloning, or lowering the exposure. Without the bright greens, and bright windowsill, the next brightest spot is the beautiful colors on the pot, your main subject. I covered it up with a piece of paper, and the pot really popped!

For your get pushed challenge, This week I want you to communicate movement to tell a story in your composition. Best of luck!

Yes. I do find the greenery to be distracting. The composition of this photo is rather awkward. It's hard to figure out what you are trying to show in this photograph. Perhaps a different point of view could have helped. Perhaps a fill flash could have helped with the shadows. The natural light is inadequate for a scene like this. It gives it a gloomy feel, but I don't think you mean the scene to be gloomy.

hmmm... I just spent a few minutes writing up some feedback on this shot (which i quite like for its rustic charm), and said feedback appears to have disappeared into the ether...

anyhoo... to recap, i too would crop out the light/greenery on the left... however, i would not straighten - the sense i have is that the pot is canted and to me, this adds to its charm... i might be inclined to darken the light reflecting off the bottle on the right as i find it a smidgeon distracting to the eye :)

as for your push challenge for the coming week... how about a black and white shot that illustrates for the viewer what it's like to live on a farm?

I've not read everyone's comments, so if I repeat anything..

I'd like to see this cropped a little tighter, darker and in black and white. Maybe throw some gritty noise in there too! There's a lot of different textures in here that would pop with some dark, grittiness!

Really like the subject and you've got a strong base for a photo!

@aussiechic29
Thank you! Your perspective is totally different than the rest, so you have not repeated any comments.
Will give your ideas a try!

@farmreporter cannot wait to see what you come up with. I find it amazing how everyone views a photo so differently!
