This is the former railway station at the foot of Folkestone Pier, where the soldiers were shipped off in their thousands to war, many never to return home.
The station has been revamped and pedestrianised, flower beds planted where the old tracks used to run, and seating provided for visiting tourists made from railway sleepers. This view is looking away from the pier back towards the town.
@phil_howcroft It's one of the exhibits from the 2011 Triennial Phil. It depicts a group of five downcast travellers standing on a base of sticks and cardboard and is entitled The Rug People. The artist Paloma Varga Weisz had witnessed the refugee camps in Calais and took her inspiration from that experience.
