This is the scene on our village green (opposite the maypole) where we gathered this morning. Just like elsewhere today, folk laid poppy wreaths after the last post, a 2-minute silence, and the names of those lost from our village in the 1st and 2nd World Wars were read out. So many with the same surnames. It was a beautiful sunny morning, but the silence and solemnity was only broken by the crows in the trees. You can see where the grass was flattened by feet, the Brownies and Scouts were there with young and old. I prayed that we should never forget, and hopefully learn from these memories.
Have a great week
Lovely shot of your village memorial.....we must photograph our village memorials and send them to English Heritage as some are in a really bad state of repair.....so i read this morning in our illustrious Sunday paper!!
Nicely placed. What I found sadder is the number of our young soldiers/sailors/airforce attending the ceremonies with numerous medals indicating active service per person. So the memorial grows in number of wounded and dead. Yes Ruth, if only we could learn...
Families - communities - countries - there is a deep sense of both loss and gratitude in these memorial shots - I find it rather lovely that you have photographed where the crowd has been rather than during the service. The solitude of the monument is so poignant.
