Well, the get-pushed challenge I had last week from that apparently dear Mr Snapchap was to 'show I had balls' and do something totally out of my comfort zone. Aargh! I don't have balls and I have a very comfortable comfort zone with high walls.. I had two ideas, sounded out the children whose eyes widened as they said 'oh yeah, likely!' One idea required someone with a key for access and a better head for heights than me, the other required some sort of helping hand and fire extinguisher. Neither materialised.
My challenge this week from the rather lovelier Jenteal was to use contrast in some way.
'Enough delay' I thought this evening, and went for the one which I could do at home. After setting up with no help except from a 10-second timer switch, I finally achieved lots of very satisfying shots which I hope fulfill both challenges. I chose this one and darkened it a smidge to get rid of some background detail, but you can see it's me!
Things I have learned tonight....
-a lit candle is quicker than a box for lighting matches
-hairspray is definitely flammable
-thick coats are essential when playing with fire, as are quick reflexes
-wire wool burns best without the pink soap inside and it pongs worst with the pink soap inside.
-balloon whisks can break and fly across the garden so check the guinea-pigs are safe first..
- you don't need balls for pyrotechnics (just a deep breath and a big gulp!!)
Thank you so much for calling by and sharing in this madness =)
FAV FAV FAV AWESOME - I read how to do this a while ago, and explained it to my husband (who works within the Health and Safety world!) who said you are NEVER doing that within a mile of our house, but then I do have a reputation for being a touch accident prone. You officially have balls!! :0) x
Haha the description had me cracking up! I love the photo it sounds and looks like you really stepped out of your comfort zone. I have always wanted to try this (I even bought the steel wool a year ago) I just hadn't gotten around to it. Thank you for the inspiration.
Oh wow, Phil! Great shot and great job!! What did you use to do this?? I have yet to ever get a light writing or similar photo ever. I have no clue what to use and what settings to use on my camera. You did a fantastic job! Fave! :)
wow - what a fantastic photo for your challenge. I thought I might challenge you to do a self portrait whilst bungee jumping from The Shard - only joking!! How about a photographing a household item in an abstract way. Hope that's okay.
@jocasta Ooh that does sound good, not done one like that before it will make me wander around the house peering at things in a different way! Nice one, thank you :)
@shepherdmanswife Hi there! In answer to your question, you just get a bit of (clean) wire wool, insert it into the end of a balloon whisk and put a chain/string at the end so that it will hang.. set the camera's focus and set the self-timer while you set fire to the wire wool (burns better if you squirt a bit of hairspray on it first) and scurry to position. Spin it around and around and around while the camera takes a slow-exposure shot. Oh, and keep your fingers, hair, clothes away!! :)
Scary but fun. Great image.
