Yesterday we went on a trip to the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon, London. There were an awful lot of aircraft but my pictures of them didn't seem to do them justice! This Memorial Window was my best capture of the day.
It was installed in Pembroke Dock Garrison Chapel in November 1945 to commemorate those aircrew, flying from Pembroke Dock Station, who had lost their lives during the Second World War.
When RAF Pembroke Dock closed down in 1957 the window was moved and installed in the Officers Mess of RAF Mountbatten, Plymouth. At that point it did not have the semi-circular top panel which had fallen into disrepair and was lost before the move to Mountbatten. It was there for many years, but when Mountbatten was closed in 1992 the RAF Central Fund decided to completely restore the window and permanently display it in the RAF Museum at Hendon.
The window features the badges of the units from the RAF, the Dominion Air Forces, and the US Navy which served at Pembroke Dock during the war.
I felt this photo was particularly poignant this weekend, as it was Armed Forces Day 2013 in the UK yesterday.
Thank you all so much for your comments. I found this piece of stained glass very interesting with the history that goes with it, but also that it has such lovely colours. It's nice that so many of you agree!
Thank you also to those of you who made it a fav. I really do appreciate it
