Brimham Rocks by fishers

Brimham Rocks

Brimham Rocks can be found almost 30 miles west north west of York, along the edge of the valley of Nidderdale. The rocks are composed of millstone grit, formed from coarse grains of sandstone, and quite hard wearing.

They have been sculpted by glaciation, wind and rain over many thousands of years into an amazing variety of shapes, and some have been given fanciful names. The large shot in this collage is the "dancing bear".

I didn't set out to create a collage, but as I sorted through the various shots I realised it was impossible to capture the variety of formations in a single shot.

This area is now owned and maintained by the National Trust, who have created a network of paths through and past the various formations, as well as providing a visitor centre, refreshment sales etc.

There are numerous other outcrops of millstone grit in other parts of Nidderdale, some of which have been used as film locations. Parts of the TV science fiction series "Blake's Seven" were filmed in the area.

@bobhuegel

Thank you Bob. One of the amazing things about the UK is the huge variety of landscapes close together. York itself is very flat, but here, less than 30 miles away is this very different dramatic landscape.
